Chbosky is obviously attempting to craft a generally optimistic tale, though, one which shows even misfits can fit in with other misfits, and so in that regard at least part of this quality is understandable. I've seen almost all of his work, and he's becoming a great actor who's very rare in the sense that he's brave and daring in contrast to the roles he has previously played. The themes reminded me a bit of a darker John Hughes film that's a compliment. The story is very simple yet complicated because of how much goes on. Since he's good at those, he adds some credibility to Charlie. The best among the three is Ezra Miller.
Charlie is palpably just another teenage protagonist, but he is not one of those who tries to prove everyone who mistreated him wrong. Wallflower doesn't feature any science fiction or fantasy elements, no alternate reality, no real onscreen death and destruction save for one fleeting image and most importantly no giant menacing bunny. This movie is so much more than that - I was truly blown away by the mature themes and moving characters. Chbosky takes the unusual step of directing his own screenplay based on his own novel a 1999 bestseller , and he left me stunned and enthralled. The brilliance is recognized only as you get to know these characters and slowly uncover their stories.
My favorite reaction to a movie is profound thought, and this one caused this in waves. He steals every line and scene he's in, becoming the comic relief. The key characters spring to life thanks to the efforts of four strong performances from young actors: Logan Lerman Percy Jackson, The Three Muskateers plays Charlie, Emma Watson Harry Potter films is Sam, Ezra Miller We Need to Talk About Kevin, City Island is Patrick, and Mae Whitman Arrested Development is Mary Elizabeth. And we all knew a Patrick. This is his vision so he knows exactly how it goes in his head and we can see throughout the film, just how much his vision has truly come alive. The result is both engaging and satisfying. A moving tale of love, loss, fear and hope — and the unforgettable friends that help us through life.
But this is overall a weirdly soft and murky looking release. Erin Wilhelmi as Alice, Johnny Simmons as Brad and Nicholas Braun as Derek were all fine. There were times where you can kind of hear her British accent slip in and even though you notice it, it's nothing distracting and it didn't really bother me. Logan's performance blew me away. That said, fidelity is fine and dynamic range has a bit of elasticity due especially to some noisier scenes like the dance and the party. Nina Dobrev, who plays Candance aka Charlie's sister, did a good job.
Stephen Chbosky handles his story very well, never feeling like it's being forced but rather it flowed nicely and carefully. Melanie Lynskey did a very good job as Aunt Helen. The formative years of a writer determine the depths to which his or her work will reach later in life. Adapting a epistolary book into a film is incredibly challenging but Mr. Chbosky says it's a personal story, we begin to understand the foundation of his remarkable writing style. In the brightly lit school scenes the cafeteria sequences, for example , things pop quite nicely and when we get close-ups in those scenes, fine detail is commendable. Interestingly, Chbosky was a film student before he became a novelist, and he talks about his mentor Stewart Stern Rebel With a Cause as well as the autobiographical elements he incorporated into this story.
Older viewers may find it overly contrived, too precious for its own good, and potentially hobbled by a wobbly transition from its source as a so- called epistolary novel. The Perks of Being a Wallflower anecdotally moves through several issues, including homosexuality Patrick is gay and Charlie catches him making out with a closeted football player , heterosexuality Charlie has a somewhat unrequited crush on Sam which provides an ongoing plot element , drugs Charlie gets unwittingly stoned at a party after eating an Alice B. Chbosky must have been blessed by John Hughes. This is more anecdotal rather than technical, but it's quite enjoyable. The romance is rather credibly lovely than a mainstream claptrap. While there isn't the concomitant graininess that 16mm usually offers, this is really one of the least sharp looking contemporary as opposed to catalog releases I personally can remember. These are interesting unedited sequences including one without any sound that offer some unvarnished glimpses at the filmmaking process.
There is no excess of profanity or nudity to divert attention from what really matters. Knowing their problems easily makes it reasonable for us to care about them. Overall, it's a great film. This may sound like The Perks of Being a Wallflower looks horrible, but that's actually not the case. I can think of no finer compliment to a writer and filmmaker than to cite them as the cause of my internal discussions related to their film. But the way it unfolds is beautiful and sad, sometimes all at once.
In the joyous moments, it's pretty delightful and plays a quite nostalgic soundtrack. Here in the film version, we're obviously spectatiors, seeing the story from the outside, and despite Chbosky porting over sections of the letters in the form of narration by Charlie, there's still a distance that was perhaps inevitable, but which works to the film's detriment. He did such an amazing job portraying the embodiment of Charlie through his expressions, his emotions, his movements, everything! Perhaps the comparison is at least a little apt since both Donnie and Charlie suffer from certain emotional disturbances, and in both films the boys are on psychotropic drugs that may or may not be ameliorating or exacerbating their inner torment. The film may ultimately be best remembered for some nicely nuanced performances, including Emma Watson in a role seemingly designed to help erase any lingering image of Hermione Granger that has been firmly imprinted for years in filmgoers' minds. Adding a bit of insult to injury is wildly inconsistent contrast, which varies from being pushed to the point of milkiness to underperforming in several dimly lit interior scenes to the point where nothing other than general visual information can be discerned.
Directing wise, it was shot very well. In fact, one of the scores made me cry because of how it emotionally resonated with the scene it was fitting in. We know the introverted, observant Charlie who so desperately needs a support system. Stephen Chbosky tells his own story on screen pretty well and the performances are quite excellent. As the opening credit rolled I was impressed with the quality of the cast including Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Kate Walsh, and Dylan McDermott. I enjoyed her performance very much.
