I straightened the end by bending it with my hands untill I felt the least amount of binding or resistance when pushing and pulling it. I detached the cables, didn't see any dust, but did notice the shift still being somewhat stiff. There have been many excellent posts on this site, that seem to indicate my troubles lie with the shifter cables. Then I lubricated the cables, as another post suggested and after a while that seemed to make a big difference with the cables still detached. To be sure the the very next time you have to overhaul you manual transmission keep in mind - all transmissions rebuild kits won't be the same - you cant ever make a poor selection by selecting the very best. Comfort for driver and passengers is excellent.

Others are better off having it done at a shop.
We provide incredibly reasonable prices on quality parts. Looking at the old cable pair you will see where the old clips were positioned and can start with that. However, when I reattached the cables to the transmission, I really had to fight to do any shifting at all. Along with that the spark plugs needed to be replaced because of the damage done by the misfiring. The problem doesn't seem to matter if the engine has been running a while or not.
Pull the carpet back and push the rubber grommet through the firewall in the passenger footwell. The cable with the black housing controls the push forward-pull back and the cable with the white housing controls the side to side movement. Now that Saturn is gone it has been a pain finding a dealer that has a clue what parts are needed. They both started about the same time when the temps dropped to single digits. After the initial surge the vehicle acts like it is going to stall, stop or cut off. Took it in on the following Wednesday, mind you I got it back on Friday night. I purchased new connectors and cables from the dealership and replaced them. Ignition coil and as a result catalytic converter went out at about 90,000 miles.
